Fuel-n-Food Lake Report
Happy Saturday!
Wanted to get this out sooner, but the lake was too good, and I was having way too much fun (thanks, Jess!). All those spots everyone thinks are open water are solid, new ice. The only exception is a small area of open water on the Broadalbin side of Sand Island towards Frenchman’s Creek – about 2 acres. Unless you live over there, there’s no reason to be there anyway. Stick to the Mayfield side, and you’ll be fine.
I found ice thickness ranging from 7″ where it was white ice to 4.5″ where it was clear. The biggest issue was a lack of snow cover for lubrication, but that’ll change with the snow coming tonight. Sinclair Point is frozen back up, but I couldn’t make it all the way to Ponderosa Pines because my slides froze to the track.
Important Notes:
- No night driving on the ice.
- Side-by-sides: Use extreme caution. Only go if you know the area well.
- Water Levels: Water is lower than it’s been in years. Pay close attention to islands and rock piles. The gates are wide open again, so the water is dropping fast.
With another couple of weeks of cold weather forecast, I think this weekend marks the beginning of a fantastic ice fishing season! Get the shanties out and have some fun!
Fishing Report:
Some big Northerns are being caught.
Walleye seem to be just starting to come on.
Tip of the Week:
Get those squirrels out of your shanties, and get them on the lake!
