Happy Wednesday!
It’s hard to believe our first week of February is behind us. What a difference a week makes in the ice though.
Between the -25 degree temperatures this past weekend and the releasing of tons of water every day, the ice has got much better. There is between 11” and 12” of ice just about everywhere. The least amount of ice I found was on the Mayfield side of Sand Island, where there was only 8”. Still plenty thick enough for sleds.
Also around the Sinclair Point near shore there was 9”.
With the water being so high stump alley is flat, almost unrecognizable because no big hills like when its dry.
The Broadalbin side of Sand Island is also flat because of water height. The ice is mostly flat with some big cracks here and there, but there is a ridge forming in the usual spot offshore of Lanzi’s heading toward Cranberry Creek.
Also, there are two small ridges coming off each end of Scout Island running back towards Mayfield side.
If you are going from Wallys to Lakeside or vice versa you will have to cross the one on the southern end. They are small so you don’t see them until your close to them, but if you’re going fast enough, they can ruin your day.
There is just enough snow for lube more so on the Broadalbin side then Mayfield side, and with the warmer Temps loosening the snow up you shouldn’t overheat.
I was running about 106 degrees all day.
Also, there is more snow on Northville end, and from Sinclair pt. to Batchellerville bridge there is plenty. After Batchellerville there is a little less snow, but still enough.
Although Desiree at Ponderosa Pines said more lube never hurts. You can get to Lakeside, Wally’s, Sport Island Pub, Twisted Teas, The Old Trail Inn, and Ponderosa Pines just fine.
In my opinion it’s going to be great conditions this weekend for Ponderosa Pines poker run. (Unless we get big Amounts of rain Thursday).
With all this being said they are dropping the lake almost 2 feet a week, so the ridges are going to change and form on a daily basis.
Also, Rocks and islands will start showing up through the ice as it drops. So, pay attention day to day.
Where you go next week may not be the same as where you went this week.

Tip of the week:
get out and ride it before we lose it
